What are Extended Service Clusters

Extended Services clusters are areas where schools have got together with other local partners including those from health, the youth service, voluntary sector and other specialist services to provide a range of services and support to children and their families. 41 clusters cover all of Birmingham.

Across the cluster (although not necessarily on every school site) families who live in the area or have children attending a local school will be able to benefit from

Access to Childcare

Activities for their Children

Parenting and Family Support

Easy access to Specialist Help

Community Access Facilities e.g Sports facilities and Adult Education

Some of these will be free or subsidised but others such as childcare will need to be paid for.

Across Birmingham we have 41 clusters each with their own cluster co-ordinator who can guide you through what’s happening in their cluster.

Where you go to school and where you live

Many children and young people may live within one cluster and travel into another cluster to attend their school. In these cases children may be taking part in activities provided by both clusters. They may be attending an afterschool group at the school they attend but take part in summer activities in the area where they live alongside their friends who live nearby.

Parent Support Advisors

All clusters have a Parent Support Adviser (PSA) with some larger clusters having two,

PSAs work with parents of children in their clusters school to support them to improve their children’s learning outcomes and address issues which may come up which parents may want some help with.

How can I find out which cluster I am in?

Contact the central team on 0121 675 5550 or extendedservices@birmingham.gov.uk with the school name we can tell you the cluster its in. Alternatively give us your postcode and we’ll call you back once we’ve checked the cluster for where you live.
